Update: My next adult contemporary romance

I’ve thought a lot about whether to write a sequel to Love Left Behind and/or Fated. It was a hard decision but I’ve finally decided that although I love the characters in each of these books, I won’t be continuing their stories. I was on the fence about it for a while but I believe that’s the best decision.

I wrote each book with the intention of it being a stand-alone novel, and while I could easily stretch out their stories, I believe everything that needed to be told was already done so in those books. I don’t want to do them a disservice (because of course in my mind they’re not fictional ;) ) and I especially don’t want to do my readers a disservice by writing a book that my heart isn’t wholly into 100%. I’ve always loved books that had an ending that gave a feeling that the characters were off living their lives beyond the confines of the pages, and this is how I feel I left Emma/Jackson and Lauren/Caden in their stories.

Of course I hate disappointing my readers and I know some of you really really really wanted a sequel, but I promise the main reason I’m not writing one is because I want to give you the best reading experience possible, and I believe not writing a sequel is the best decision.

The good news is that I’ve started a new contemporary romance novel that I hope you’ll love just as much. It’s in its infancy stages and I’ll update when I have a better idea of when it’ll be released.

Thanks to everyone for their patience while I waffled on my decision. Hope everyone is doing well!

I for one appreciate your decision. I was just thinking yesterday that some books that are stretched out can be frustrating. I do not like to wait months, etc to find out what happens. I read your books and loved them. I am really looking forward to reading your next materpiece!

  4. Tatia White says:

I agree with you. Some books are dragged out that should not be. When I read a book and get into it, those characters come to life. I become attached to them. You have this ability to completely draw me into whatever you write. Books are my escape as I’m a stay at home mom, so thank you for that. I look forward to whatever it is that you have coming next!

  5. Gloria Herrera says:

We just will have to re-read the stand-alones. Loved Fated!

  6. Jena says:

I love your plan! They were great books and I can’t wait to read more from you!

  7. Amber says:

I’m glad for your decision. I agree whole-heartedly, the stories were perfect the way they ended. Look forward to your new book and many more to come!

Thanks everyone! I’m so glad you guys agree with my decision, but I totally understand if some are disappointed. I’m the same way when I really love a book. I don’t want to let go of the characters and want to read more about them! I’m really excited about my next contemporary romance and can’t wait to get it to you guys!

I agree with your decision but, I must say that I feel in love with Jackson (don’t tell my husband that) and was ready to get on a plane and go to New York to find him when I finished Love Left Behind. Can we keep him as a character and just change his name. lol Looking forward to reading the next book!

  11. JMV says:

I’m glad you are not writing a sequel. Sometime stories just need a happy ending! I will enjoy your next books
just like I’ve enjoyed all your others!

  12. Jamie says:

I totally agree. I love where these stories ended. I’m also a sucker for a happy ending & now in my mind, I see them leading long, happy lives full of love. Lol. Thank you for these novels, and looking forward to your upcoming story.

  13. Tammy says:

I agree with your decision and explanation. As much as I have grown to love the characters, both books allowed me to feel complete at the end. You haven’t disappointed me, so I can’t wait for the new book. :-)

  14. monica ann says:

I don’t mind at all. I loved those stories and feel complete with how they ended. Just don’t stop creating the alpha males. You do this so well. New is great…Can’t wait..

  15. SHKolee says:

I really appreciate the support for my decision! I get so involved with my characters while writing that it’s hard not to give them a resolution at the end, although I know that’s not the current trend! They deserve a happy ending, dammit! :)

BD – That’s hilarious! Our husbands don’t need to know everything. ;)

Monica Ann – I’m addicted to alpha males!

I am so glad you decided on leaving fated & L.L.B. the way they were- They were amazing the way they finished and a finished book with characters we love is alwaz sad when we get to the end, but knowing your writing style we can alwaz anticipate your next great read an know like the greatest indulgence of chocolate we will get our fix AGAIN- lol(:

  17. MEstes says:

Although I love books that are written in series style, I do respect your decision. I have read both L.L.B. and Fated twice. I will just have to read them once in awhile to relive and love their stories all over again. I will have to say that L.L.B. is my favorite book of all time!!! I cannot wait for your next Adult Contemporary Novel.

  18. Yvette says:

NO NO NO total wrong decision!!! just finished LLB rushed to find out if i’m going to be able to more only now to find out i’m NOT!!! I wanted to be at there wedding and maybe their struggles of getting pregnant (due her being in her thirties) which could also have the happy ending you wanted to leave the book with.
I have already got fated not yet read it and i kind of don’t want too now if again i’m going to be left wanting more!!
    You should maybe reconsider PLEASE

    • SHKolee says:

Sorry, Yvette. LLB was written as a stand-alone and although I considered a sequel due to reader requests, I realized that it would be a disservice to readers to write a second book that my heart wasn’t fully into. Emma and Jackson got their happy ending and I believe it’s best to leave them to it. But I totally understand wanting more when you get invested in characters.

  19. BS says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE both books! Love how you write! Can’t wait for the next books to come!

  20. Ashlie says:

fated should have had more chapters because the ending was rushed :(

  21. Cass says:

Sulks a little but agrees….I cannot stand the trilogy mania and multi chapter books inundating us. If each of you work stands alone and yet makes people think of the secondary characters and want more…you are obviously awesome. Dragging things out is not awesome. Love your work so far, can’t wait for more.

    • SHKolee says:

Thanks so much Cass! I really appreciate your kind words. I can’t wait to get my next book out to you guys!

  22. I so badly wanted a second love left behind. Im not a big reader but i couldnt put the book down. I was so engrossed in the love story and the big shockers in the story. I respect that you are not writing a second but i would have loved to see wether jackson and emma stayed in bora bora and got married and had babies!!! You are a fantastic writer and had me sucked in that i was reading every chance i had! Thank you for your hard work and im looking forward to future works from you!

    • SHKolee says:

Alicia – Thanks so much for your kind words! I’m so glad you enjoyed Love Left Behind. I totally understand being disappointed that there won’t be a sequel but I’m hard at work on a new contemporary romance novel and hope you’ll love this one as well. Thanks for reading!

  23. Antonia says:

I love reading and I have to say Love Left Behind was and still is my favourite book of all time! I have read it twice already! I so badly wanted a sequel to it but I understand why you aren’t going to do one. I ready Fated and I loved that too! Just started Of Love and Regret and I am really excited to read it. You are a terrific author and as a writer myself, you really inspire me to write a novel of my own. Thank you for your fantastic reads and I can’t wait for more of your romance novels!!

    • SHKolee says:

Antonia – Thanks so much! I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed my books. I hope you like Of Love & Regret as well. Thanks for reading!

  24. janine says:

I just want to say that Love left behind it is one of my all time favorites, I honestly couldnt put it down til the end and I must say I never thought there could be a sequel as well although I am a huge fan of Jackson and Emma, I felt you did such an AMAZING job at concluding their love story that nothing could be added its perfect as a stand alone and I am proud of Jackson and Emma for not giving up on the love thank you and I cant wait for your next book.

    • SHKolee says:

I’m so happy you enjoyed it, Janine! I love hearing that it’s one of your all time favorite. Thanks for reading!
